Afasic - Family support services

What we do

Afasic supports and provides information for families with children and young adults who have Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) with a focus on Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

SLCN is the term used for children who have significant difficulties with talking, listening and/or understanding language.

Afasic uses the term solely for children whose speech, language or communication difficulties are not caused by other types of need.

DLD is a relatively new term used to describe a severe ongoing difficulty with talking and/or understanding what other people say – and for which there is no obvious cause.

Who do we support

Afasic supports parents and carers with children and young people who have difficulties with listening, talking and understanding others. We appreciate that being able to listen, understand and talk to others are crucial life skills. We understand the importance of these skills for making friends, managing emotions, learning and working. We try to present information in as jargon-free a way as possible so we hope that we can de-mystify these terms and signpost you to further information as needed.
