Barnardo's North Wales Services Families Matter: Conwy / Denbighshire / Flintshire - Family support services


What we do

Provide specialist support to children and families where at least one, or both parents/carers, are misusing drugs and/or alcohol. To achieve this, experience and expertise to provide a service that will work to reduce the negative impact of parental substance misuse on children and young people and reduce the risk of young people (including young carers of substance misusers) becoming involved in substance misuse themselves; in addition to preventing and mitigating future ACEs.

The aim is for families of substance misusing parents affected by substance misuse to function more effectively and provide safe environments for children.

Who do we support

Offering a confidential and friendly service, across the three counties (Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire), we will provide services and interventions that will include (but not be limited to):
- Providing assessments of need; assessing families in a holistic way in relation to their substance misuse but also assessing ACE’s within the household
- Providing a range of targeted interventions to families that support decision making, increase resilience, self-esteem and problem solving
- One to one support that assists children and young people to address the negative impacts of substance misuse on their lives
- Provide opportunities for group and peer support for children and young people to build sustainable support networks and reduce feelings of isolation
- Delivery of parenting interventions linked to substance misuse
- Identification and management of risks – dynamic and static
- Advice, information and awareness to families and other professionals

Professionals or individuals can refer a child/young person or parent who lives in Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire where there are issues around parent/carer misusing substances/alcohol.
